This lively etching of windmills along a canal near Rotterdam has the freshness and spontaneity of a sketch made on the spot – qualities greatly admired by Jongkind's contemporaries, including pre-Impressionist painters. Jongkind, hailed by the French painter Édouard Manet as the "father of the modern landscape," was also clearly indebted to Rembrandt's approach to nature. As a Dutch artist who made etchings, Jongkind could not escape Rembrandt's influence, especially this one.
