Armand Rassenfosse was born in Liège on August 6th, 1862. He was an autodidact Belgian graphic artist, book illustrator and painter. His masterwork was a series of illustrations for Charles Baudelaire's 'Les Fleurs du mal'.
Together with Félicien Rops, the 'Rossenfosse'-technique came into development. This different take on varnishing meant a real development of the art of engraving. 
Rassenfosse was known to be working with the Bénard printing house, and he created a large number of posters. By the time his career ended, Rassenfosse turned to painting himself. Lone and vulnerable women could be counted among his subjects of preference, although he took great joy in depicting different aspects of his personal life as well. 
Rassenfosse passed away on January 28th, 1934. Not unlike the Maitre de L'Affiche series, L'Estampe Moderne was a portfolio printed between 1897-98, published by Imprimerie Champenois, Paris, contained 24 monthly portfolios, with four original lithographs in each. Each commissioned only for this series. Some of the contributing artists included Mucha, Rhead, Meunier, Ibels, Steinlen, Willette and Grasset.
