Vivian den Hollander (Scheveningen, Netherlands 1953)
is well known a Dutch children’s book writer. Vivian born Vivian Spaans. From a young age she wanted to become a writer. After the HBS she considered studying Dutch or journalism, but eventually chose the PABO. After her studies she started teaching at a primary school in Gouda, where she got many ideas for her later work. While she worked in primary education, she started writing children’s stories more and more fanatically. In 1988 her first book, “Kiki and Pim”, about a twin of three, was published. In 1992 her book “Alleen beer mag mee” was published, a moving story about the former Dutch East Indies. After this her writing career took off. In 2000 she said goodbye to teaching for good to become a full-time writer. In addition to writing, she regularly visits schools, libraries and bookstores for lectures and presentations. She has been nominated several times by the Dutch Children’s Jury. Some of her best-known series are ‘Spekkie en Sproet’ – two detectives, aimed at children aged 7 and up with drawings by Juliette de Wit. ‘Lisa en Jimmy’ – Preschool reading books, in which each book deals with an emotional theme such as going to school, being sick and swimming lessons, with drawings by Dagmar Stam.
Vivian likes to work behind the writing desk by the window on the first floor above the gallery on the Lage Gouwe.
